A typical first visit usually lasts 30-60 minutes, and sometimes more. You are welcome to have anyone with you that you desire. Be prepared to get to know us as we get to know you. We want you to feel comfortable with your high risk pregnancy specialist and care plan.
An in-depth knowledge of your obstetric history is key to forming a personalized care plan for your current or future pregnancies. How many times have you been pregnant and what were the outcomes? Did you have any pregnancy complications such as fetal growth restriction, diabetes, preeclampsia or preterm birth? If you are trying to conceive, how long have you been attempting conception?
We will ask about any medical conditions, past and present, and any medications you are taking. We will ask who is currently managing your medical conditions, how frequently you see your health care provider, and how you feel your condition is controlled. For example, if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, we will ask about your recent glycemic control and blood pressure readings. We will also ask if you have had any surgeries.
Do you have any family history birth defects, genetic syndromes, stillbirth, recurrent miscarriage? Do you or your partner have any children with genetic conditions?
We will identify your high risk pregnancy issues and communicate these to you without technical jargon. We believe patient empowerment begins with knowledge and that pregnancy outcomes are best when patients and their loved ones are informed about their care.
No two pregnancies or conception journeys are the same. In keeping with our fundamental philosophy of helping patients gain greater control over decisions that affect their healthcare, we will form a personalized, detailed care plan with you and communicate this to you prior to the end of your appointment. High risk pregnancies can be stressful, but having a plan in place can alleviate much of the uncertainty. Rest assured you will be cared for with dignity and respect.
Many studies have proven that good communication between healthcare providers optimizes patient outcomes. We will communicate directly with your obstetrician, family practice physician, midwife, and any specialists. We send a formal consultation report via secure fax to your healthcare provider's office. If needed, we call the office directly for a verbal conversation with your provider regarding your care. Maintaining this level of communication allows us to provide you the best care possible.
