diabetes in pregnancy policy

Pregnant patients with diabetes—both pregestational and gestational—are at increased risk for a range of maternal and fetal complications, including fetal abnormalities, preeclampsia, stillbirth, and long-term health consequences related to suboptimal glucose control. Careful monitoring and active participation are essential to optimizing outcomes.

At Critical Perinatal Solutions (CPS), patients with diabetes are enrolled in our Diabetes in Pregnancy Monitoring Program, a structured, physician-led approach designed to provide close oversight and timely management.

To ensure safe and effective care, patients are expected to:

  • Monitor blood glucose four times daily (fasting and two hours after each meal)
  • Maintain an accurate, written glucose log
  • Submit glucose values weekly for physician review

Management includes:

  • Regular in-office visits for ultrasound evaluation, including fetal growth and assessment of fetal well-being
  • Interim telehealth check-ins for glucose review and treatment adjustments as needed

Due to the high-risk nature of diabetes in pregnancy, consistent participation in this program is required. Incomplete glucose monitoring or failure to provide documented values limits our ability to safely manage care.

Patients who are unable to adhere to the outlined monitoring and follow-up plan may be transitioned out of the practice, as ongoing management without adequate data does not meet the standard of care and poses significant risk.

We are committed to providing a high level of physician-led care and look forward to partnering with you to achieve the best possible outcome for both mother and baby.
